Pint Report: Summit Oatmeal Stout
For seventeen years, Minnesota craft beer drinkers have enjoyed Summit Oatmeal Stout solely on a nitro tap at their local watering hole. This beautiful beer looks so perfect with its creamy tan head atop the obsidian-colored stout. Now, as if sensing that humanity needed a win, Summit Brewing Company is giving its fans a way to enjoy this legendary go-to in 12-ounce bottles.
Remember When. . .
Like many of you, I associate this beer with times that now seem so bygone. Usually, drinking this beer means I am sitting in the Summit Ratskeller enjoying a laid-back conversation with a friend of two, or at any of the plethora of watering holes proudly serving Summit Oatmeal Stout on nitro. However, the Summit Ratskeller is closed for what I believe is going to be at least July. The watering holes I want to get back to are either still shuttered because of the pandemic, or limiting the amount of people they serve to 50% capacity.
The simple fact that this beer is available in packaged form is a boost to my mood. It is not a nitro bottle, but the mouthfeel is still smooth thanks to the ingredients used in the beer. The trademark roasted malts along with their dark chocolate and nutty notes are still readily apparent in each sip. In fact, without the nitro, there is a little more sweetness in the beer than I remember. Summit Oatmeal Stout arriving at my doorstep evoked the same feelings I have experienced when bumping into someone I have not seen since pre-pandemic times. I think that we all need those feelings to help us realize that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s Darkest Before The Dawn-Just Like Summit’s Oatmeal Stout
The Summit Ratskeller will be open again. Our favorite local haunts will be open again. The Summit Oatmeal Stout will flow fresh from the taps on nitro as it did before. We will come together again soon just like we did before. The space between us will be there, and we will more than likely still be wearing a mask. However, the eyes of our long-lost friends and drinking buddies will still sparkle with warmth and familiarity. The laughter we took for granted before will be boisterous and soul-healing, if a little muffled through our masks. We have traded hugs for elbow bumps, but the camaraderie that sharing a beer together creates remains steadfast.
So, go grab a pack of Summit Oatmeal Stout for a delicious and roasty reminder of what will soon be again. Soon, you will be having that spontaneous run-in with Damo in the Ratskeller. Before you know it, seeing Bill, Phil, and Adam slinging Summit beers will be part of your Saturday. We will get there. Thank goodness Summit gave us something to drink for the home stretch. Prost!
