On the fourth day of RIS-Mas my true love gave to me…Giantsbane!
In my self-imposed Advent calendar of Russian Imperial stouts, here is the 4th day’s festivities. You can check out Day 1 (Deschutes Abyss), Day 2 (Founders CBS), and Day 3 (Olde Hickory Event Horizon) as well to spread the cheer!
Fair State Giantsbane
Fair State Brewing Cooperative has really jumped up in my estimation over the past year. They’ve been branching out into more complex souts, solid lagers, and now a canned version of this Double Stout. I first tried a sample of this beer at The Happy Gnome, and then had a larger pour this past week at McCoy’s Public House‘s wonderful Fair State Beer Dinner. I just had to get myself a 4-pack of it! The beer is on the low side for RIS with ABV of only 8%, but still packs a punch.
Aroma: Sweet, grainy malt character is strong. Roasted malts and milk chocolate. Hints of cinnamon, lactose?
Appearance: Deep black and opaque in color. This has a huge thick tan colored to brown head that never quits. Every time I take a sip the carbonation rouses more head. And stop thinking dirty thoughts about my choice of words. Sicko.
Flavor: Very smooth with creamy mouth-coating sensation. Rich mix of dark chocolate and milk chocolate. Not bitter but has enough bitterness to balance the sweetness. Grainy to bready malt character. Not getting dark fruits in this one.
Overall: Perfect balance for drinking. Rich and creamy but not overly sweet. This is a new favorite for me this year! Well done.
