On the 3rd day of RIS-Mas my true love gave to me…Event Horizon!

In my self-imposed Advent calendar of Russian Imperial stouts, here is the 3rd day’s festivities.  You can check out Day 1 (Deschutes Abyss), and  Day 2 (Founders CBS) as well to spread the cheer!

Olde Hickory Brewing’s Event Horizon 2014

Olde Hickory Brewing is an old-school craft brewery out of Hickory, North Carolina and has been in the beer scene since 1994.  I managed to snag a couple bottles of this a few years back when I was in Asheville for a week long brewery trip.  Event Horizon is their Russian Imperial stout, brewed with honey and aged in bourbon barrels.

Event Horizon is also a really disturbing space horror movie that I took my wife to on our very first date. Keepin’ it Klassy!

Aroma: Lots of bourbon on the nose right off the bat.  Vanilla as it warms and just the barest hint of smoke.  Sweet and malty.  Slight papery oxidation note, but not overwhelming.

Appearance: Very dark brown to nearly black.  Like its namesake it seems to suck light into into its black depths!  Fine deep tan colored head.

Flavor: Up front burst of raisin, dark tangy dried cherries, followed by a rise of milk chocolate.  A bit of oxidation is mildly distracting but does play well with the dark fruits.  Roasted malt presence but malty enough to balance bitterness from roast.  I do pick up honey notes as it warms.  Balance to the sweet side but not cloying.  Grainy notes as it warms up as well.

Overall: A complex beer for sure.  This has held up well for its age but I would not age this any longer based on rising oxidation.  Bourbon and booziness strong in this beer and increases as it warms up.
